How to Set a Wallpaper on macOS (Sequoia): Desktop Pictures & Wallpaper Rotation
macOS Sequoia consolidated wallpaper settings into System Settings. You can drag an image directly onto the wallpaper preview, browse Apple's built-in collections, or set up a rotating wallpaper that changes on a schedule. The interface is simple, but there are a few details worth knowing - especially around resolution matching and rotation.
Before setting a wallpaper, check your display's resolution. Go to System Settings → Displays to see the native pixel count. An image that matches this resolution will look sharp without scaling. The Desktop sizes preset on any gallery wallpaper or /upscale with the Laptop & Desktop preset generates the right file.
Step-by-step
- 1.
Open System Settings → Wallpaper
Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner, then System Settings. Scroll down the sidebar and click Wallpaper. You'll see your current wallpaper with a preview and a grid of available images below.
- 2.
Pick a built-in wallpaper or add your own
Click any thumbnail in the grid to apply it immediately. To use your own image, drag the file from Finder and drop it directly onto the wallpaper preview area. Alternatively, click the Add button (a folder icon) to browse for a file.
- 3.
Choose light, dark, or auto
Below the preview, macOS offers Light, Dark, and Auto options. Auto switches between light and dark variants based on your system appearance schedule. Some Apple wallpapers have separate light and dark versions built in.
- 4.
Set up wallpaper rotation
Click the dropdown next to your wallpaper preview and choose Change picture. Set the interval (every 5 seconds to every day) and optionally tick Random order. macOS will cycle through all wallpapers in the selected collection.
- 5.
Drag and drop from Finder
The fastest method: open Finder, locate your image, and drag it onto the Wallpaper preview in System Settings. The wallpaper changes instantly. This works with .jpg, .png, .heic and .webp files.

Common questions
Can I set a different wallpaper on each Space on Mac?
Yes. In System Settings → Wallpaper, right-click a Space thumbnail (or use Mission Control to create a new Space) and set a different wallpaper for each one. Each desktop can have its own image.
How does wallpaper rotation work on macOS Sequoia?
Enable Change picture in the Wallpaper settings and choose an interval. macOS rotates through the wallpapers in the selected collection (or a custom folder). Random order is optional.
Does macOS stretch wallpapers that don't match the display?
macOS scales wallpapers to fill the screen by default. If the image aspect ratio doesn't match, it may crop the edges. Use an image that matches your display resolution for the best fit.
Drag and drop is usually the fastest path - find the image in Finder, drop it on the preview, done. For images from the gallery, the Desktop sizes button generates the right resolution automatically, or paste a Pinterest link into /upscale and pick the Laptop & Desktop preset.
