How to Set a Wallpaper on Windows 11 (Background, Spotlight & Slideshow)

Windows 11 gives you three background modes: a single picture, a slideshow of images from a folder, and Windows Spotlight (Bing's daily rotating image). You can switch between them in one place, and you can set any image as your background from the file manager without opening Settings at all.

Before setting a wallpaper, check that the image matches your monitor's resolution. A 4K monitor (3840x2160) looks best with a 4K file. If the image is smaller, Windows stretches it and it goes soft. Use the Desktop sizes preset in the gallery or /upscale to generate the right resolution.

Step-by-step

Open Settings and go to Personalisation
Press Windows key + I to open Settings. Click Personalisation in the left sidebar. This is the central hub for all visual customisation on Windows 11.

In the Personalisation menu, click Background. You'll see a dropdown labelled Personalise your background with three options: Picture, Solid colour, Slideshow, and (if available) Windows spotlight.

Choose your background mode
Pick Picture to set a single image, then click Browse photos to find your file. Pick Slideshow to cycle through a folder - choose the folder and set the change interval (every 1 minute to every 1 day). Pick Windows spotlight for Bing's daily rotating images.

Set the fit
Below the image picker, choose how the wallpaper fills the screen: Fill (stretches), Fit (letterboxes), Stretch (distorts to fill), Tile (repeats), Centre (original size), or Span (across multiple monitors). Fill is the default and works best for images that match your resolution.

Quick method: right-click the image file
Open File Explorer, right-click any .jpg, .png or .webp file, and choose Set as desktop background. This skips Settings entirely and applies the image with the default fit. It's the fastest way to set a wallpaper.

Common questions

What is Windows Spotlight and how do I enable it?

Windows Spotlight is a built-in feature that pulls a different Bing image every day. Enable it in Settings → Personalisation → Background → Personalise your background → Windows spotlight. It rotates automatically.

Can I set a slideshow with random order?

Yes. In Settings → Personalisation → Background, select Slideshow, pick your folder, and toggle Shuffle picture order. The slideshow will cycle through the folder in a random sequence.

My wallpaper looks blurry on a 4K monitor. How do I fix it?

The image is probably lower resolution than your display. Use the Desktop sizes preset on /upscale to generate a 3840x2160 version, or pick a 4K file from the gallery. Windows stretches small images, which causes the blur.
